Last week, the Archetype team had the privilege of spending time with our York, PA neighbors at York Wallcoverings — a truly American heritage brand whose legacy is woven into the fabric of U.S. design. What began as a simple visit evolved into a journey through craft, innovation, and possibility.
A Legacy of American Craftsmanship
York Wallcoverings is no ordinary manufacturer. Founded in 1895 and still operating in Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Valley, York is recognized as the oldest and largest wall covering producer in the United States. York Wallcoverings+1 Over more than a century, the company has quietly held onto its roots in American manufacturing — even while expanding its global reach to over 85 countries. York Wallcoverings
Walking through their facility, you can feel that legacy: archive rooms filled with historic patterns, presses that date back decades, and a staff who deeply understand how to balance tradition and innovation. York operates multiple printing technologies—from vintage rotary presses to modern digital systems—keeping the finest of techniques alive while pushing design forward. York Wallcoverings
Inspiration in Motion
On this visit, we toured production lines, observed the calibration of color across repeat patterns, and witnessed the care and precision that go into each roll of wallcovering. What struck us most was how York treats design decisions with the same gravity that a glass fabricator like Archetype does: color matching, layering, texture, and scale all matter tremendously.
We got an early peek at York’s upcoming collections. The new designs are fresh, bold, and clearly rooted in their archives — a respectful nod to heritage, but also a push toward something contemporary and expressive.
Parallels in Glass: Why We Relate
At Archetype, we’re in the business of custom glass solutions — glazing, cladding, partitions, and architectural elements that transform space. One of our flagship technologies, Interpainted Color Glass™, provides architects and designers with nearly limitless control over color—a capability that resonates strongly with our conversation at York. Archetype Glass
Just as York calibrates ink and pattern layer by layer, we at Archetype calibrate glass interlayers, backpainted surfaces, textures, and more to achieve tonal precision, transparency, translucency, and visual depth. On every project—whether a backlit wall panel or a sculptural glass partition—we aim to elevate design with craftsmanship and technical rigor. Archetype Glass+1
The parallels are striking: both glass and wallcovering must respect scale, light, color, and durability. In both, customization is key. In both, you cannot hide from close inspection—the details must be exacting.
Seeding Future Collaborations
Throughout our visit, a spirit of opportunity permeated the air. We left York not just admiring their artistry, but imagining how our worlds might intersect. Could we see glass-clad walls backed by a patterned York print? Or architectural installations that combine translucent glass panels and printed wallpapers in rhythmic dialogue? The possibilities excite us.
Our team walked away energized — enriched by the experience, humbled by their legacy, and eager to explore American-made partnerships that push boundaries.
If you’re an architect, designer, or specifier curious about custom glass solutions, Interpainted glass, or want to talk about integrating glass and wall systems in novel ways—reach out. Let’s design boldly, together.
